Big Bang and the Creation of the Solar System

The following video shows the big bang through the creation of the universe, then the solar system, and onto the planet Earth and its evolution through 4.6 billion years.

  1. Just to start off, this video shows GORGEOUS pictures. The explosions was SO real and it felt like it happened right in front of me! After the explosion happened, it shot through the universe really fast and the fire just stopped and created a planet! During each time period, they would show the caption including the name of the period and the actual time in that period such as Devonian, Triassic, Jurassic, etc. I thought that was really great since we were able to easier understand everything that we were looking at. I also really enjoyed how they showed us the changes of the Earth over time. The geography of the Earth changed a shocking amount and it was really interesting to learn about.

  2. Although the video didn't have a narrative, I still found it very informational. The whole video was basically a visual representation of the most important events, processes, and terms/vocab from the beginning of the universe 13.67 years ago to now. The effects were really cool, and it explained a lot.

  3. Although this video was very long and had no dialogue in it, I still thought it was a very interesting way to teach the idea. I thought the technology to show all the time periods and explosions was terrific. I could clearly see how the universe took many, many years to evolve. I found the dinosaur period very interesting, and the way the moon was created. This video gave me a quick, brief understanding of the Big Bang and the creation of the Solar System.

  4. I just naturally found everything interesting. It's interesting because from the start of the Big Bang Theory everything just continuously expanded. But it is also hard to imagine to picture that everything just formed naturally because of that expansion. For example, after the time period with the volcanoes came to this thing where it formed some sort of life form and those life forms happen to turn into living creatures.

  5. wow!!! I thought that was really cool because you could see all the stages of the earth and the universe. I also thought the pictures were really cool.

  6. I have never really thought about how the Earth came to be. After watching this video, I have broaden my knowledge about the Big Bang and about Earth itself. I never realized how much the Earth has changed, and how different species have evolved throughout the years. I have also never fully understood how the moon came to be. After watching this video, I realized that the moon use to be a part of Earth. After Theia struck earth 4.5 billion years ago, the moon was created.

  7. I like how this video was a timeline in the universe and earth. One surprising thing was how cosmic microwaves were created so early. I also think it was interesting how early life started because I thought it started only 2 billion years ago. I also wish they talked more about the other planets.

  8. The graphics and stuff look really cool. It goes well with the music. The crash at 3:10 makes me wonder if something like that could happen to earth, and how it would affect us. The earth will probably be destroyed by something eventually, but that doesn't seem like a very pleasant way to die.

  9. Showing how everything develops and comes together starting from the big bang, this really helps me develop an understanding of how the universe and life was created. I also think it is interesting that all of these creatures came from the same thing, and they all started out from the same types of cells.

  10. I find it interesting how they told us in the video that the big bang is still happening today, but at a slower rate, and though this is just a theory, the video shows as much scientific proof as we can get right now (so we think). We cant go back in time and view the universe 4.6 billion years ago, so all of our research on the big bang, and astronomy in general is based off of what we see now. That is what is explained, that we are still expanding, therefore the big bang is a logical theory.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I enjoyed the pictures and the music. I also found it interesting how detailed the movie was. It showed almost every stage that we believe happened at the start of the universe. I liked the showing of the DNA and cells combining and splitting. Also how the animals evolved in fast forward.

  12. This video was difficult fo rme to watch. I just think the universe is too complictaed and watching it "form" Its overwhelming. It all just seems so impossible and unreal that its hard to believe that any of that happened (I'm not disagreeing with the Big Bang Theory I actually believe it a lot. I just think its outstanding.) The images of the first "Earth" is just SO different from what we have today. Luke we have bulildings and streets and HUMANS. To think that we all dervived from such destruction is unreal.

  13. I thought the video was really cool and with everything exploding it actually seemed beautiful, in my opinion. I thought that it was really amazing how something exploded out of nothing and how the video was kind of like a timeline, showing how long ago everything happened.

  14. I thought that it was interesting to see how animals have evolved over time. Starting with single-celled organisms and progressing to the animals we know today.

I found it interesting to see how the solar system was created through images instead of through someone explaining it orally. I also found it interesting to see how things evolved and how things were created. I learned something new from this video. I did not know that a collision between the earth and Theia created the moon. The animation was really cool especially when Theia crashed into the earth and created the moon. It is interesting how one explosion created everything.

  16. We can easily learn from this that as time progresses so does science. As years go on both naturally and us as scientist invent new things that change the way we live our life.

  17. I was really amazed how the video showed very important events from the beginning of the universe to the evolution of humans. It was really interesting to understand the full theory of what many scientists believe happened.

  18. I found this video fascinating because of the content as well as the animations. I never knew that the first stars appeared as early as 13.3 billion years ago.

  20. I think it's interesting how people have found some type of solution to how they think Earth was made. They definitely worked hard to get this information to come up with this theory.

  21. This video is about all the things that have happened to our Earthover the year: creation of our universe, solar system, and the evolution of the living creatures in our planet. It was really cool to see the dinosaurs evolve into mammals.

  22. This video was super super cool, and the way they showed everything was amazing. Definitely one of my favorite parts was when Theia hit the earth to create the moon. I had never known anything about this at all. I also really like the Cretaceaous-Tertiary extinction event because the way they showed the meteor hit earth and it looked like everything blew up.

  23. This was a cool video. It would have been more interesting/easier to follow with narration.
However, I did enjoy watching it and it was interesting to learn that the planet Theia struck the Earth 4.533 billion years ago and that action created the Moon.

I thought the creation of the moon was amazing and how the video incorporated the molecules coming together to create trilobites later on and then plants and then the evolution of the Haikouichthys to fish and sharks. And then at the end, they showed the final step towards our world. I loved how this video summed up how we came to be from the beginning of time (starting from an explosion-Big Bang) to the dinosaur period and then our current period and how it evolved. The graphics to me were also very nice and creative.

  26. I find it interesting to think that life is just an extreme anomaly in the chaos of the universe that surrounds us. And furthermore, the intelligence of humans civilization is also one of a kind amongst all other organisms. I feel like we are just a spec of dust compared to the astronomical scale of the universe. I am mind blown by just how improbable the chain of events that has led to the creation of a planet with such excellent living conditions.

  27. It was so cool watching this video and seeing how everything evolved. Its fascinating to know how the universe was created and to process everything that happened through 4.6 billion years. It was amazing to see how the Earth came to be in one video. I have always wondered if scientists are interested in why all of this happened and in the end of the video it says no one knows why.

  28. This video is about the creation of the solar system. It is also about the big bang. Basically, there were a bunch of molecules that formed together and created a supernova! It also shows that a bunch of little pieces of rock started collecting and attracting to one piece of rock or asteroid. This is how it started to get bigger and bigger. This eventually formed different planets (like earth) and moons in our galaxy. Then, a lot of asteroids and meteors started hitting the earth. There started to be huge explosions and eruptions. Now, little organisms started to form on the planet. They were tiny, but they were there! They evolved into some of the animals we know today. A lot of them also became dinosaurs. There were also some early mammals on this planet at the time. A meteor then crashed into the planet and the dinosaurs died out. They did, however, evolve into different animals, some of which we know today. They evolved into birds and fish. Some animals evolved into humans!

  29. I thought this was the most interesting out of the two videos. It showed how the universe and everything on it was created. I found this interesting because it showed how our Earth evolved, step by step, and it went very into depth with the whole process of whole the Earth was created.

  30. The video showed a quick history of how the universe, the galaxy, the earth, and life on earth was formed. I think it is amazing that all of these things could have happened all because of an explosion of matter 13.6 billion years ago. Also it is incredible that even knowing about everything in the video, humans have a very limited knowledge of the universe

  31. This video taught me exactly what had happenned during the big bang. I always thought that it was just a "cloud that exploded and made everything" which is clearly wierd. I now know exactly how big the universe is compared to Earth and how the universe is still expanding.

  32. Its so cool that stars were made 13.3 billion years ago. I had no idea that theia striked the earth to create the moon! My favorite part was when we got to see the evolution of the sea creatures. The first mammal was the Cynodent. 65.5 millions years ago the dinosaurs got extinct :( I thought it was amazing that we get to see our first ancestor !! This is my favorite science video because I thought it was very detailed and well done.

  33. It was pretty cool to see the whole history of the universe unravel, starting from "the big bang". When I saw that the stars were one of the first things to immerge was amazing to me, because even though they were created approximately 14.67 billion years ago, we can still see them today (even though they're probably different ones)! Also, it was interesting to know that the elements also existed in the very early period of the history in the universe. I noticed that the universe was quite unstable at first, and a lot of explosions and such had occurred during that time, but later on, things became more complex, especially on Earth. Eventually, fish-like organisms emerged on our planet, and then they were able to explore on land. It's also really incredible to know that humans were made as a result of those tiny, fish-like organisms! The universe is just that wondrous. :) ~EMILY MA 8B

  36. The video was very interesting but I find the Universe to be mysterious. I find it fascinating to know that tiny particles such as quarks are able to evolve and contribute to the creation of the Universe. Although the video is only a representation of what supposedly happened, it broke down some of the major stages of the creation of the Earth and the Universe, and it was easy to follow along. However, I find the Universe to be mysterious because no one currently knows the reason behind its creation.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Completely mind-blowing how the universe was created just from a couple of tiny little molecules crashing together... I mean, what are the chances that the right combinations would just happen? And yet it did happen, and here we are today still trying to figure out how something so small could create an explosion so big that the universe is still expanding, even after 13.7 billion years. The Pillars are pretty mystical in themselves, especially since they are mostly giant shadows surrounded in multicolored light. It's also strange seeing how Earth most likely was when it first came to be, as just a mass of extremely large rock that was also extremely hot, and seeing how Earth transforms into the life-giving planet it is today. And that's only an extremely SMALL portion of our universe; our Earth is PUNY compared to everything else that could be lurking around in this universe. who knows what else is out there- might even be aliens that we just have to get close enough to discover!

  39. This video was very interesting. It really helped me understand the whole concept of evolution, all though there were no commentaries. The fact that you had to figure out what exactly was happening at each moment, was pretty annoying. During the video, it was very cool how they showed you how everything happend. For example, how they showed you how the moon was created. By Theia striking Earth to create the moon.

  40. I think this video did a good job showing the events. I did not know their were stars as early as 13.4 billion years ago. I think it amazing how we are able to know what happened in out universe so long ago. The earth changed so much over time, from being so hot to being so cold, and that we are able to know all of that is so cool. -Zoe Orlin 8D

  41. How is there cosmic microwave background radiation?? Is Theia a previous planet that no longer exists because it striked Earth to create the moon? And how does Earth still exist after the collision with Theia? And how did they get images of these things that have occurred many many many years ago? And what exactly is Stellar nucleosynthesis, and how do the elements relate to it?

By the way, it's so interesting to watch the creation of the solar system; and the images are so fascinating and beautiful. I remember one of these images from class today (the image with the "Pillars of Creation")!

  42. I find the topic of the Big Bang and the creation of the universe an extremely complex topic. First of all, how do scientists have proof or can even guess that all of this happened and all of that took place in 13 billion years? It just seems so amazing. The beginnings of elements and atoms is what led to how the universe and the Earth is today. All of the changes on Earth that led to how it is today is so complicated, because at first there was only storms and volcanos and constant change, and then the atmosphere and creatures came to be, and they just kept evolving. It's just an amazing topic.

It was also cool to see how our earth has evolved from the outside. From the triassic period which was from 251 million years ago (mya) to 199 million years ago,to the jurassic period, which was from 199 mya to 145 mya, to the cetaceous period which was from 145 mya to 65 mya, and last to the neogene period which was from 23 mya to today.

  44. This video was really good at explaining what happened in the big bang. I think that the way they showed how the universe was formed by things like quarks and evolved into nuclei and then to huge things such as planets and galaxies. Also, It's really cool how they showed the first creatures of the Earth growing overtime and evolving. Furthermore, the way they showed the plates moving to form how our continents look today was really cool.

  45. I thought it was interesting how they showed only writing and pictures and started with the big bang and then continued with the first organisms and then the Triassic period, the earliest mammals, the Jurassic period, then a little while later the extinction, some time later the earliest primate evolved, and finally today. It was very interesting to see how the earth was created and evolved.

  46. i thought it was amazing to see a time lapse sort like thing of our universe. i also liked how it went in order and also told us what was happening and what it was called. it is very exciting and very tremendously amazing to see all the things happening in the universe that people cant see, but can make very descriptive things just by thoughts and scientific examination. it was also very superior to find out things that have lived on out planet and places near us. it really shows that we actually have improved during the years.

  47. Great transitions between the many different organisms. I didn't know that the earliest forms of mammals predate those of dinosaurs. It was also helpful to see how the surface of the Earth has changed over time to form the continents of today.

  48. It really amazes me that all of this happened because of one crash of a planet and a moon. Also, the animals from millions of years ago look really similar to the ones we have now. First the big bang, then atoms, then stars, then stars make the elements inside them, then supernova, and particles are released from inside stars, then the rest of the elements are created in the supernovas leftover gasses. Proto-planetary disc is formed, rocks orbiting it draw towards each other because of gravity and make bigger rocks, which orbit the star in the center, one of theses rocks is earth, theia collides with earth and the explosion creates rocks which orbit the earth, they then gravitate together into the moon. 4.4-3.8 billion years ago heavy leftover from collusion asteroid bombardment, crusts form, magma cools, dna forms, single celled organisms, multi cellular organisms, organs, trilobites, plants on the surface, complex fishes in the water. fins become legs, lizard-like creatures go out on lang, 228-200 million years ago, earliest dinosaurs, also earliest mammals, continents mostly formed, 65 million year ago dinosaur mass extinction. Allows for maamals, 49 million years ago earliest primate 3.9 billion years ago hominid evolution.

The story of how we got here is amazing!

  50. I thought this video was very interesting. I was captivated by how the big bang was the start of our entire universe, and most importantly-- our solar system. One explosion was the origin, the roots, of our life today. Without the big bang, human life wouldn't have been produced. I was so fascinated by how much our Earth has gone through, over 4.6 billion years. Life billions of years ago was so different than from what it is today. The dinosaurs and early life intrigued me, and how they adapt to their always changing environment. Comparing Earth today to how it was before, is so different! Years ago, our Earth was changing temperatures, environments, life, and will continue to. I think living beings long ago adapted because our environment wasn't exactly stable. But in my eyes, I can come to a conclusion that our environment today is pretty stable, with the exception of global warming.
This video basically showed me that our Earth is always changing, and will continue to in the future.

  51. This video creates an accurate and understandable timeline of the creation of the Universe to today. It really captures the raw power it took to create what we know today. However, I don't agree with the last statement. Some scientists suspect how this all happened.

  52. I like how the video expressed the entire creation of the universe without using words. Instead it expressed it visually which made it easier to understand. I also thought it was interesting to see how Earth is always changing. George Scott

  53. It's amazing of how a visual model can tell the beginnings of the universe and life so realistically. The sudden explosion of cosmic energy that created the big bang led to the creation of molecules, which led to the creation of life, which ultimately led to our modern day selves. What I didn't understand, was how elements came to play in creating galaxies and planets, as the elements just faded out into a nebulae in the video. Maybe this is how elements became in the beginning?

  54. I didn't realize there were some words until the very end, but the weird thing is, I still understood what was happening. The solar system is so simple yet so complicated at the same time. So how exactly would a solar system start? It would be inside a universe. But where would the universe come from? It can't come from space. The universe is space. I like how everything keeps growing with time, and then at the end your left with all hese questions, and then it's just like, and no one know why...

I thought that the video was very interesting. The graphics and everything in the video was amazing, but what was really fascinating was how it showed the Earth and all life on Earth being created and evolving over time. It was cool to see how the Earth was created and then how everything from the Big Bang theory expanded and evolved through time, showing how complex everything really is.

Also, the pictures and animations weren't just scientific, they were awe-inspiring and I think I was a little bit scared of the extreme power of the universe that was shown in these pictures.
