The Universe - Poetry in Motion

The Universe is a great big beautiful place. The clip below talks about the Universe and how truly magnificent it it. It is like Poetry in Motion.

  1. WOW!!! This video has really got me thinking about our galaxy and everything that happened to it before I got around. The narrator provided very interesting facts and the pictures were shockingly gorgeous. They were breathtaking and very detailed; they also helped me understand more about the different parts of our galaxy, The Milky Way. I also liked the personification used in the poem - "The universe screams in my face." They also used really powerful lines such as "Stars dies so that I can live."

  2. I thought this video was interesting and informational... plus the music was cool. When one looks into the night sky, they see stars. Or at least that's what they think. I think the point of this video is to explain how much one can see in just a night sky. The universe is a vast space if you know what you're looking at.

  3. What I got from this video is that we humans have a connection with the galaxies and/or universe. That we humans stepped out of the super nova. I don't 100% understand the narrator's theory, but I see where he is coming from. This video gave me a better picture of humans' place within the universe.

  4. I thought it was very interesting. It was like looking at the bigger picture of the universe and seeing what it really was and what it was made up of.

  5. Wow. I didn't know that it took that long for the sun to complete one orbit. 200-250 million years is a long time. I didn't know that there were so many globular clusters, and that they each contain so many stars. I have never really seen stars at night, so I had no clue that you could actually see so many stars with your naked eye. I didn't realize how big our galaxy actually is, 100,000 light years is HUGE.

  6. I think it was interesting how they were talking about the stars. How he cannot touch the stars but the stars touch him. He also talks about the universe and all the amazing things in it. He talks how everything happened so he could be here.

  7. I really enjoyed this video!I like how it felt like he was telling a story to viewer as apposed to just telling facts. This video taught me how how truly stunning it is to look at the stars and imagine and to 'see into the past and present".

  8. That was cool. It scares me a little that we're just in a small corner of our galaxy. Compared to the entire universe, we're nothing. We're less than nothing. The universe is so old and we're all so young.
I also liked the poetry-ness of the video.

The video was very powerful. The poetry was very beatiful. It was told in first person which intreged me much more than if the video were listing simple facts about the universe. It was a creative way to tell the viewer that we are part of the universe. It was a nice review of what we learned in class. It gave me a different perspective on the universe. The universe always seemed intimidating in the sense that the universe is so big. I never considered myself part of the universe.

  10. I think it is amazing that even though the galaxy has a diameter of about 100,000 light years, we can still see lots of it (like the milky way and the stars).

  11. This video was really intriging to me. I think it's amazing how out of reach stars and other galxies are and how we can feel so close to them. I like to look at stars because I feel like I am looking into my future. I never knew that other people felt the same way. I dont think people fully understand how crazily complex the universe is. It's like this "thing" that is just huge and endless. Sometimes me and my friends just talk about the universe and how tiny we actualy are. We (Humans) feel so superior when infact earth is just a little speck and we are just in another little speck floating around in a pool with billions of specks. I mean, we are practically non-exsistent!! It's kind of scary actually. It's scary to think how small you are compared to the universe which practically created you. I'll stop ranting now. But thats what this video made me think about.

  12. the pictures were truly amazing and astounding. I also liked how the guy talked about star clusters, super novas, and the milky way. He also showed how small we are in comparison to the universe.

  13. The video, I think is very informative. I think its fascinating how many stars they said were in a galaxy. I personally think it is just a reinforcement of what we learned in class though because I know a majority of what the video said.

  14. I thought it was really interesting that all of the facts about the galaxy, sun, big bang, stars, and so on were a result from somebody wondering why he could see his hand in the dark. He was really attached to the point of view of the Milky Way from an inside perspective (Earth).

    ReplyDelete
  15. I learned that the milky way contains 200 billion stars.

  16. Videos like this are quite inspirational. It inspires us to learn more and more about the universe and explore its marvelous wonders.

  17. I liked this video because it reminds us that it isn't just humans and our planet. There is so much more out there that we are apart of.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I really liked the way the man really brought the whole idea that we all stepped out from supernovas and everything into the video. I think it really made the video more personal. I'm a little bit confused when the person was talking about being able to see the galaxy with binoculars. I think its really cool that we could do that but how often does that happen? And don't you need a telescope to see a lot of the things into our universe?

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think the Gamma Radiation was interesting because it forms a bright light in the sky. This is because of its mass. It's also really interesting how humans have a connection with the universe.

  20. I thought the video was interesting and really helped describe what the Milky Way galaxy is. The video also helps you understand the concept of light years and how these are incorparated in the galaxy, along with where we (earth) are in the galaxy. -Cassidy Capstick 8B

I was surprised about how many stars there were and how large the universe was. Although I knew they were both really big, I hadn't known that there were that many stars and that the universe was that huge.

  22. Very interesting video, i think its cool that there are things in the milky way, and there are stars that we can't see with the naked eye but that its there. There are a lot of stars that are there but we can't see when we look up at the sky at night. The earth is nothing compared to all the galaxies. A galaxy is made up of so much, and stuff we can't even see but can infer is there, a galaxy is so much more than what we think of it.

I thought this video was interesting because it is sort of like what we were talking about in class but more visual. As, I was watching the video, I was amazed at all the things in our universe and how we can see it using gamma rays and other rays. Also, is the reason why our galaxy is spiral is because of the black hole in the middle? In our galaxy, I also didn't know that we have about 200 billion stars in it and we could see them and an arm of our galaxy right in the sky with our naked eye.

  24. I thought this video was very interesting! I didn't know that you can see objects in the dark more clearly when you can see the milky way. I also thought that the fact that stars drift aimlessly at hundreds of kilometers per second is really interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  25. This video is about our earth and the wonders of the universe. The man in the video was looking at the stars one night. He saw an arm of the milky way galaxy up in the sky. He saw a star in the sky that night that was bigger than the others. He saw that it was the surface of another sun! His eyes saw only a very small point of light, but his mind saw much greater. He can "see" the invisible rays of gamma radiation from huge stars, converting into pure energy. He can see stars, drifting in the sky aimlessly, with no intentions. He can "see millions of years into the future. He says the blue light will blow up someday. It will sterilize every nearby solar system in an apocalypse. The video is about this man's imagination and also what he actually sees. You can tell he is fascinated by the solar system and the world around him.

  27. How is it possible that he could see his hand in complete darkness, and how can he be so sure that what he is seeing is actually there. If what he is seeing is actually there how is it possible that he can see it from our plant.

  28. This video was very informative and the narration was good.
It reminded me that the energy in me comes from the Sun and that there are 200 billion stars in the Milky Way.
It also reminded me that sometime in the distant future a Big Bang is predicted to happen again.

  31. I thought that the video was very interesting. The only thing that I didn't understand is since a light year is the distance that light travels in a year, is what we are seeing on Earth the past because the light from it is arriving here now? IT is also mindblowing that the galaxy is massive, but it's still small compared to the universe.

  32. I thought that this video was very well put together. I thought that the way the narrator described everything was truely fantastic. And I think that it is cool that I can now think about the universe in a different perspective because of how much I have learned about the universe.

  33. I really appreciated the narrator's awe of the universe. It really did seem unbelievable to me that we had such a humongous universe filled with so many unimaginable and incredible objects. I never really knew or thought about otherworldly things like supernovas or globular clusters since as people, we're so centered around our own planet and our personal lives. Plus, just from 50 years of studying, we've learned so much about our universe, and yet, we barely know anything at all. After being introduced to astronomy, I realized just how much is out there that hasn't yet been explored, and how insignificant Earth seems in comparison. I hope that the future will bring us more of an advance in technology and more discoveries and knowledge of our universe, The Milky Way. ~ EMILY MA 8B

  36. The video was very interesting and fascinating. I was astonished to learn that our galaxy (the Milky Way), by itself, has approximately 200 billion stars. I was also surprised to see how small our planet is compared to our whole galaxy. The Universe is very large and I am extremely curious about the number of stars there are in total and what exists outside of The Milky Way.

  37. The video was very interesting. I really got the clear thought in my head how huge our galaxy is. A light year is 6 trillion miles and the milky way galaxy has a diameter of 100,000 light years. I also got an idea of how big it was when I found out that it takes our sun 200-250 million years to orbit the central bulge of our galaxy. I also found the stars very interesting. I couldn't believe that the milky way contains 200 billion stars.

  39. Very interesting! The milky way is HUGE! And 200,000,000,000 stars in the milky way??? Wow!
However, I don't understand how we can see that part of the galaxy in the sky, if we are a PART of that galaxy. Is it a reflection? And also, how do we know that there will be an apocalypse in the future? There's no possible way that we can predict that for sure...

  41. Watching this video, was really fasinating and interesting. During the video, the narrator talked about how looking at something that seemed so small (in space), he could actually learn and know so much from it. For example, the large group of stars that he at first thought was just mist. Also, how he can see into the future, making educated guesses on what to be prepared for in the future. Another thing that I found to be interesting, is how he could see background radiation, left over from the The Big Bang.

  43. You're right, this truly is poetry in motion... everything looks so mystical. I love how you can see things tunneling in space but you never really know what they are. Exploding nebulae look especially beautiful, especially since all those gases are lit up so brightly. Black holes especially are extremely cool, since they only send things exploding in two directions, nowhere else. All the dust in the middle of space makes for an extremely cool sight, especially when they are lit up by light from stars and such. Spiral galaxies remind me of strange beings in space, sort of like one-eyed huge monsters that you just can't grasp through the vast distances.

    ReplyDelete
  44. The way the narrator of this video describes space and the way he observes it is very deep and powerful and made me think. I never really thought about what else goes on in our Milky Way Galaxy, and what other celestial bodies might exist. I also never really thought about how powerful and mighty the universe really is, and the power of the destruction and creation that happens all the time within it. It's also really interesting that we are made up of a tiny portion of star dust from exploding stars, which means without the stars, humans wouldn't exist.

  45. The narrator says that seeing the galaxy with your own eye (not using any equipment)and by just looking up to the sky on a clear night will not let you see what the galaxy really is. I thought the narrator made an interesting point by saying that you can only fully understand the galaxy once you know the science behind it. I also thought that the narrator made another interesting point saying that before we knew a lot more about the galaxy we never understood how magnificent it is and grand, old, and how we can barely comprehend it.

  46. This video was really interesting and really cool because it made you think about a lot of things. For example, when he says how our universe is so many miles, and how it takes our sun hundreds of millions of years to orbit once, it makes me think about how small we are in comparison to everything. We are just little people on a little planet on a little solar system in a little galaxy which is only one of many and it's in the universe. Also, when we says we are a part of a star because it gives our neurons energy I think that's really amazing.

  47. i think that the universe is very interesting and unpredictable. There are millions and billions of stars, galaxies, and planets. they are known to come from a big explosion called "the big bang". "the big bang is known to create the interior of space and the universe. all we know is everything we know. scientists have seen radiation from what is called "the big bang". that is a move forward to realizing that it may be true.

  50. What he is saying is that the stars similar to the ones hundreds of light-years away that we can see, are the origin of all the matter on earth including us. The universe is frighteningly massive, but that fact is what protects us from other regions of the universe.

  51. I find it amazing that our very fear (the death/end of our star) is the very thing that brought our planet to life. It was fascinating to find out that things are never what they seem, especially in the night sky. Who knew that although stars seem like "tiny, white, dots, in the sky", they are actually galaxies millions of light-years away, that (for all we know), might just hold living organisms in them?

  52. A couple years ago, I had absolutely no idea how large our universe was. To me, we were on planet Earth, other planets did exist, we had stars, a sun, and a moon. That's it. But after the past few lessons in class and this video, I am still trying to process how big our universe is. Trying to process how the milky way is just one of the many galaxies in our ever expanding universe. I am completely mind blown by how this narrator got his point across. 200 billion stars? That's amazing! If I had just heard him speaking, disregard the video, his words would definitely bring a visual image of the milky way into my mind. He definitely made me think about how insanely large space is--what a light year is and how long it is, how many stars are in our galaxy... This video was truly captivating. I am proud to say that I am very impressed with our universe!

  53. This video was very creative. It has ideas that I've never even thought of. I never realized that "Stars die so that I can live". I never understood that. This took the universe on in a whole different perspective, instead of what it means, we think of what it means to US.

  54. This video was very interesting. The way the narrator speaks and the way the diagrams and pictures are presented is very effective towards helping me understand what he is trying to say. This video really got me thinking about how BIG our universe is. Compared to the whole universe, we are nothing. I am still trying to understand how BIG our universe is.

  55. I really like how the narrator showed how small we are compared to out solar system, our galaxy, and our entire universe. It was also cool to think how the sun will absorb our planet one day, and to think that we might have moved on to a different planet by then. George Scott

  56. The video was so interesting and cool. I thought the milky way's arm was so magnificent. I didn't know anything about our galaxy except for stars, planets, and the milky way. I never knew it was so interesting. Also, the sun orbiting the galaxy surprises me, too. You might think that the Earth taking a year to orbit the sun was a long time. Hearing that the sun takes 200-250 MILLION years for the sun to orbit the milky way. And to know that there are 200 billion stars and seeing it is so pretty. And if you think about, YOU were born somewhere so beautiful and so amazing. I just love how I was born in something that not so many people care about. Now since I have watched this video, I want to learn more about our galaxy.

  57. I like how the video sort of stated that we all have the universe in us. At the end of the video, the narrator stated that "stars die so we can live". How does this relate to death? The narrator also said something about radiation left over by the Big Bang. If we can capture this energy, maybe we can research our true beginnings...

  58. I think it's amazing how they making cold hard facts seem so beautiful. They aren't very, well cold and hard anymore. So many stars, yet we don't even get to see them. That makes me sad. I wish we could see them every night. Scientists want to know everything about the universe, but it's not really poetry anymore. I obviously want to know things that can help us survive, but poems are mysterious, the universe is mysterious. Somethings are just better left unknown. "Dude, I am you." so straightforward, and it doesn't make much sense, but it is true. we are the universe, and the universe is us.

  59. After watching this video I felt so small, to think that our planet and the people on it are here for such a short amount of time. I love how he said "My eyes saw only a tiny point of light but my mind saw so much more" I found this interesting because we can barely see anything with our eyes but we can figure so much out with our mind.

The Universe is truly astounding, especially our own Milky Way. The video clips and pictures look amazing. I can never truly grasp how large our galaxy is, and how we are so small and petty compared to it, yet we are a part of it, and the person talking thinks this too.
